- Scripts with communities
I enjoy having exchanges where I enter into a partnership with communities to help them develop theatre productions where they tell their own stories in their language. These can take months, weeks or years to develop. I often direct them in non theatre venues that have a history that is relevant to the story. I work with groups who interest and inspire me. In the past this has ranged from building workers to survivors of sexual abuse to people of a particular geographic area for example Footscray in Melbourne.
- Landscape installation
I work as an artistic director with visual artists supporting them to design images for the landscape. The images can be viewed aerially or on the land. They are ephemeral and last from one day to 10 days. The images have a resonance to the town or community that hosts them. Local materials that are abundant in the area are often used as the medium.
- Festivals
I work as an artistic director developing festivals and ensuring the programming is relevant to the local community. I also work as a consultant helping festivals extend their artistic program. In the past I have developed events that included a ride on mower ballet, a kayak ballet, and machinery ballets using front end loaders, cranes and heavy machinery. I have also sited festivals in places such as show grounds and disused warehouses.
- Ideas and creative problem solving
As a consultant I have solved problems through creative ideas. For example how the city of Melbourne should acknowledge and celebrate the millennium. The out line of a ritual I developed was commissioned and used Melbourne and in 22 sites across the state of Victoria. I also developed a way of linking regional communities, (with Peter Matthews,) on a project entitled 'such fertile ground. I think of ideas and then if they are picked up and used I can help plan and implement them. Creative problem solving can be used to draw people to a site in a town, to help people celebrate an asset they have, to link groups or develop peoples confidence and esteem in their community or experience.
